Spirulina is a simple, one-celled form of algae that thrives in warm, alkaline fresh-water bodies. The name "spirulina" is derived from the Latin word for "helix" or "spiral"; denoting the physical configuration of the organism when it forms swirling, microscopic strands. Spirulina is being developed as the "food of the future" because of its amazing ability to synthesize high-quality concentrated food more efficiently than any other algae. Most notably, spirulina is about 60 percent complete protein, with all essential amino acids in perfect balance. In comparison, beef is only 22 percent protein. Spirulina has a photosynthetic conversion rate of 8 to 10 percent, compared to only 3 percent in such land-growing plants as soybeans. In addition, spirulina is one of the few plant sources of vitamin B12 and is nonGMO. Spirulina also provides high concentrations of many other nutrients - amino acids, chelated minerals, pigmentations, rhamnose sugars (complex natural plant sugars), trace elements, enzymes - that are in an easily assimilable form. Spirulina is one of the richest beta-carotene foods with ten times more concentrated beta-carotenes than carrots.
There are no artificial dyes or chemicals used to colour the Xtreme Fish Foods. The colour is determined by the main ingredients we use, which for Xtreme Aquatic Foods are sustainable marine proteins like, Krill, Shrimp and plants like Spirulina.
The marine proteins we use is sourced from either the ocean waters around South Africa or Alaska and colours change depending on the time of year, location and season of the catch. Krill varies in colour – the red or pink colour of the food will be more vivid than at other times.
Our Spirulina is farm cultivated in California and it's specifically grown for use in various products (not just our fish food). We do not use Spirulina which has come from overseas or from waste water growing conditions. So, just like the marine proteins we use, depending on the season the Spirulina colour may vary which in-turn will affect the vibrancy of the green colour within our foods.
Variations in colour intensity or vibrancy does not affect the overall quality, taste or nutrition of Xtreme Fish Foods.
It's the Combination of Krill and Spirulina that makes Crave flakes the best on the market!. We mix our Krill and Spirulina flakes at a ratio of 60/40 to make the best two flakes on the market even better. Our flake formula was formulated by Xtreme almost 25 years ago and is not available anywhere but from Xtreme Aquatic Foods.
Other brands advertise and promote probiotics in their formulas. Quantities like 1,000,000 cfu/g and 3 million cfu/gram and others somewhere in between. Xtreme has been adding 1.5 million cfu/gram for many years. Recently, we wanted to see how our formulas with probiotics stacked up against the others.
Here's what we found. Nobody, including Xtreme. is delivering measurable probiotics to their customers. We know how much we were adding to the batches and we believe others are adding them per their advertised numbers; however, once these micro-organism spores are added into the raw mix and subject to the high pressures and intense heat required to produce the end product (flakes or pellets), the active spores are mostly killed. In our mill's testing, changing the milling processes did not make a significant difference. No matter how the process was altered, multiple processes with lowered pressure and/or heat; the number of ACTIVE spores in the finished product was negligible. For that reason, we stopped adding probiotics to our formulas and substituted it with a patented Vpak (Vitamin pack) to reduce the impact of fish stress and increase fish's disease resistance.
Our lids and jars are made in the USA. When COVID hit, plastic lid manufacturers started making hand sanitizer jars and lids and stopped making our lids. We scrambled around looking for replacements and the only ones we could find that worked were shiny and/or fitted with foam liners. We quickly bought some, had them tested and found the foam liners might actually be better because they provided the same sealing properties but remained in the lid after initial opening. They continue to provide sealing protection from our place to yours, and now, until all the food is used. However, these lids are becoming difficult to find as our old lids are coming back on line. We will be moving back to the old lids as soon as orders arrive.
Xtreme Aquatic Foods constantly evaluates our pursuit of marine and land-based proteins. We search for ways to source sustainable marine proteins for our customers. Our suppliers are dedicated to finding the highest quality protein and plant ingredients without harming any of our planet’s delicate ecosystems.
